Sheriff Eddie Cathey of the Union County Sheriff Department in North Carolina sadly reports the death of Sergeant Jeffrey Greene, North Carolina Highway Patrol,

Sergeant Greene, 54, was killed when an 18 wheeler vehicle overturned and crushed his patrol vehicle.

Sergeant Greene was stopped at the intersection of Highway 74 and Sutherland Avenue facing west on Highway 74. He was waiting to make a left turn at the intersection.. Another driver was next to him in the left through lane was stopped in a Kia sedan. A tanker style semi truck was stopped in the right lane.

The driver of the semi truck, later identified as Eddie Weeks, of Weeks Trucking, failed to stop behind the tanker truck. In an attempt to avoid a rear-end collision, Weeks swerved to the left to avoid a collision with a tanker truck. The truck jack-knifed and the trailer of the semi truck struck the Kia sedan that was stopped in the left lane next to Sgt. Greene’s vehicle. The semi truck then overturned crushing Sgt. Greene’s patrol unit that was stopped in a left turn lane.

The driver of the Kia sedan and the semi truck were transported to Carolinas Medical Center for minor injuries.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol Traffic Crash Reconstruction Team is conducting the crash investigation. The Team flew to the crash scene in the State Police Bell Jet Ranger Helicopter and spent the entire day at the crash scene.

Sergeant Greene was both an Air Force and Marine Corps veteran. He served with the Union County Sheriff Department for 10 years. He is the first officer to be killed in the line of duty in his department.

Sergeant Jeffrey Greene is survived by his wife, April; two daughters, Nicole and Allison, and five grandchildren.
