Sheriff Greg Hamilton of the Travis County Sheriff Department in Texas sadly reports the death of Sergeant Craig Hutchinson.
Sergeant Hutchinson, was shot while confronting burglars in his back yard about 1:30 am just after he ended his afternoon work shift. He called the Sheriff’s Department via his portable radio requesting back up as he had subjects running through his back yard with tools in their hands. Sergeant Hutchinson pursued the suspects through his yard and confronted them. Gunshots were exchanged and the suspects dropped the tools they were carrying and fled the scene. Sergeant Hutchinson was found lying in the yard next to a creek where he had interrupted the suspects in their burglary.
Sergeant Hutchinson was transported to Round Rock Medical Center where he succumbed to his gunshot wounds later in the morning.
Two suspects remain at large and a search for them continues. The shooting is being investigated by the Round Rock Police Department with the assistance of the Austin Police, Troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Pflugerville Police and the FBI.
Sheriff’s Hamilton stated that Sergeant Hutchinson was his Field Training Officer when he joined the Sheriff’s Department so this investigations is near and dear to him. Sheriff Hamilton requested prayers for the Hutchinson family, officers of his agency, law enforcement agencies in general and our Nation, which is morally bankrupt and value depleted.
Sergeant Hutchinson served the Travis County Sheriff Department for thirty two years and was planning on retiring in the first week of September.
