Chief Earl Morrison of the Hutto Police Department in Texas sadly reports the death of Sergeant Christopher Kelley.
Sergeant Kelley, 37, was struck by a vehicle and dragged down the road by a subject attempting to evade arrest.
Sergeant Kelley stopped a vehicle for a minor traffic violation being driven by a subject that was wanted on a warrant. As a result of the traffic stop, Sergeant Kelley attempted to arrest the subject. The suspect fought with Sergeant Kelley and broke free from him. The suspect then got into Sergeant Kelley’s patrol vehicle and struck him as he fled the traffic stop. Sergeant Kelley was drug down the road by the vehicle for an unknown distance.
Sergeant Kelley was transported to Seton Medical Center Williamson where he succumbed to his injuries. The suspect was taken into custody a short time later. The investigation into Sergeant Kelly’s death is being conducted by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Sergeant Kelley served the Hutto Police Department for seven years. He had previously served at the University of Texas System Police, Travis County Corrections Officer and a Texas DPS Telecommunications Operator. Sergeant Kelley is a United States Air Force veteran and is survived by his wife and two children.
