Chief Chip Cason of the Loxley (Alabama) Police Department sadly reports the death of Sergeant Charles Mitchum.

Sgt. Mitchum, 57, was involved in a single vehicle crash while he was en route to the Baldwin County Sheriff Department Office and Training Center. He was going to the firearms range when his patrol vehicle suddenly left the roadway and struck a tree.

Sgt. Mitchum was flown to the University of Southern Alabama Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. He died later in the day. Officials later learned that he suffered from an emergency medical condition that caused him to lose control of his patrol vehicle.

Sgt. Mitchum was named Loxeley Police Officer of the Year in 2011. Chief Cason said, “He is the poster child for the all-around good guy in the police department,” as he gave the award to him.

Sergeant Charles Mitchum-gone, but never forgotten. EOW: Monday, January 26, 2015.
