Dana Wingert, Chief of Police in Des Moines, Iowa and Police Chief Ross McCarty, of the Urbandale Police Department jointly and sadly report the deaths of Sergeant Anthony Beminio and Officer Justin Martin.

Des Moines City Police and Urbandale Police officers responded to a call of multiple shots being fired in an area that bordered each jurisdiction. Reports indicate that one officer was shot shortly after 1:00 am. Later that was determined to be Officer Justin Martin of the Urbandale Police Department.

As other officers responded to that scene, Sergeant Anthony Beminio was found also shot as he was seated his patrol vehicle. That shooting was reported to have occurred about twenty minutes later. Sergeant Beminio was transported to Iowa Methodist Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

There was no indication that there was any interaction between the officers and the suspect. Both officers were ambushed as they were seated in their respective patrol vehicles. It is believed that both officers were shot with a high powered rifle. An investigation into both shootings focused on a single male suspect. A search for that suspect was initiated and local media outlets were provided with his identification for citizen assistance.

The wanted suspect was located hours later and is in custody at this time without incident. A motive for the shooting has not been determined, however it is believed that the suspect posted a video on YouTube.com two weeks ago which indicated he was causing a disturbance at a local school and had interaction with police officers at that time. There was also some suspicion indicated on the video that the suspect may be suffering from a mental disorder of some type. Whether that video is relevant to this investigation has yet to be determined.

Officer Martin was single and did not have any children. He is survived by his parents.

Sgt. Beminio was married and is survived by his wife and children.
