Chief Dana Wingert of the Des Moine Police Department in Iowa sadly reports the death of Officers Susan Farrell and Carlos Puente-Morales.
Officers Farrell, 30, and Puente-Morales, 34, were conducting a routine prisoner transport from Council Bluffs back to Des Moine during their midnight shift. About 12:30am during their return trip on Interstate 80 near the Waukee exit, the officers patrol unit was struck head-on by a vehicle that was heading westbound in the eastbound lanes.
As a result of the crash, both vehicles burst into flames. All occupants of both vehicles were killed in the crash. The crash is being investigated by the Iowa State Patrol and it has been confirmed that both of the officers and the wrong way driver were wearing seat belts. Seat belt use by the prisoner was not published.
Officer Farrell served the Des Moine Police Department for five months. She had previously served with the Polk County Sheriff Department for several years.
Officer Puente-Morales served the Des Moine Police Department for five months. He had previously served with the Ottumwa Police Department. Officer Puente-Morales was active in the Iowa National Guard and had been deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan.
