Chief Jeffrey Blackwell of the Cincinnati Police Department in Ohio sadly reports the death of Officer Sonny Kim.
Officer Kim, 48, responded to a 911 call of a male acting erratically at an intersection being armed with a gun. Upon Officer Kim’s arrival the subject commenced firing at Officer Kim. Officer Kim returned fire and both he and the suspect were struck multiple times.
Officer Kim was transported to University of Cincinnati Medical Center where he succumbed to his wounds. The suspect also died of his gunshot wounds. A motive for the shooting was not immediately known, however a social media site posting indicates that the suspect was prepared for a fatal confrontation with police and wanted a police officer to shoot him and kill him.
Officer Kim immigrated to the United States back in 1973. During his law enforcement career, he earned 22 commendations for his service and in 2012 received a special commendation from the United States Department of Justice.
Officer Kim served the Cincinnati Police Department for 27 years. He is survived by his wife and three sons.
