Chief William Benson of the Wheeling Police Department in Illinois has reported that Officer Shamekia Goodwin-Badger, 33, died Saturday following her collapse at a training exercise the previous Thursday.

Officer Goodwin-Badger was performing a departmental physical training exercise when she suddenly fell ill.  She was transported to the Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge for medical treatment.  She never regained consciousness and died Saturday afternoon.

Temperatures have been reported in the Wheeling, IL area as ranging from the mid to high 70’s to low 80’s in the afternoon during the training program.  The exact cause of her death has not been disclosed.

Officer Goodwin-Badger worked the midnight shift and also served as a youth services officer and evidence technician.  Officer Badger served the Wheeling Police Department for 5 years Prior to her service with the Wheeling Police Department; she was employed with the Hawthorne Woods Police Department for 4 years.

Chief Jennifer Paulus of the Hawthorne Woods Police Department stated, “She was a wonderful officer and a good friend to a lot of the guys here.” “She would still be with us had I not had to lay her off due to budget cuts” back in March, 2008.  “She was a pleasure to work with and this is sad news to hear.”

Officer Goodwin-Badger was a decorated Army veteran, serving in Kuwait and Iraq.  She is survived by her 13 year old daughter.
