Officer Robert Potter of the New Mexico Motor Transportation Division was working at the scene of a tractor-trailer crash when he suffered a major heart attack while rendering aid to one of the vehicle occupants.

Officer Potter, age 43, was one of several officers on the scene of the wreck that occurred on Interstate 10.  Officer Potter was transported to Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces where he underwent surgery.   He was recovering from surgery but suddenly sustained a subsequent heart attack and died on Thursday.

Officer Potter served the New Mexico Transportation Division for 6 years 11 months.

He was a military veteran and is survived by his wife and son.
