Chief James Band of the Oregon City Police Department has reported that Officer Robert Libke, 41, passed away as the result of a gunshot wound he sustained the previous day.

At about 1:00 pm, Sunday afternoon, Officer Libke responded to a house fire at 841 Linn Avenue inside the city limits.

As Clackamas County Fire Department personnel arrived to extinguish the fire, first responders were advised that the occupant was armed with weapon and making threatening gestures with the handgun.  Fire Department personnel were evacuated and officers searched for the suspect.

Officer Libke was one of the first officers on the scene and confronted the occupant with his weapon drawn.  After being ordered to drop his gun, Lawrence Cambra, 88, fired one shot striking Officer Libke in the head.

The suspect immediately retreated back into the burning structure.  A SWAT Team was called in and the suspect was later shot by members of the Clackamas County SWAT Team.

Officer Libke was flown via Life Flight to Legacy Emmanuel Medical Center in grave condition.  He passed away after being taken off life support.  Officer Libke was a 4 year veteran of the department.
