Chief Dennis Baldwin of the Killeen Police Department has reported that SWAT member Officer Robert Hornsby was shot and killed early Sunday morning.

Officer Hornsby deployed to the Grandon Manor Apartment complex at 1600 Grandon Drive, during a late Saturday night disturbance.  An intoxicated subject confronted multiple persons at the apartment complex pool and eventually brandished an AK-47 assault rifle.  The subject was then observed retreating into his apartment.  As the SWAT members were setting up their perimeter, the subject fired one shot into the air and returned to his apartment.

As SWAT officers moved in to apprehend and subdue the suspect, he answered the door and retreated into his apartment with his hands raised.  SWAT officers continued their approach.  Suddenly, the suspect picked up his rifle and opened fire on officers.  Hornsby and another SWAT officer were struck by gunfire.  Additional SWAT officers returned fire killing the suspect.

Hornsby and his fellow SWAT officer were transported to the Carl R. Darnell Army Medical Center where Officer Hornsby succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 1:27am.  The other SWAT officer remains hospitalized in stable condition.

Officer Hornsby served the Killeen Police Department for 4 1/2 years and was a member of the agency’s SWAT team for one year.  He  is survived by his wife, Kim; his son, Braxx, 18 months old, and his daughter, Layden, who is five.
