Chief Roger Beadling of the Perryopolis Borough, Pennsylvania Police Department sadly reports the death of Officer Richard Anthony Champion.

Officer Champion, 36, was killed in a vehicle crash while pursuing a traffic violator. During the pursuit, Officer Champion had his emergency lights and siren activated. While he was pursuing the suspect violator, an SUV style vehicle made a left turn in front of Officer Champion’s patrol vehicle causing the collision. Officer Champion’s patrol vehicle caught fire and he was trapped within.

Several citizens came to his aid in an attempt to extricate him from the vehicle but they were unsuccessful. The driver of the other vehicle involved in the collision was airlifted to a UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition. The suspect driver and vehicle being pursued continued to flee and remains at large. The Pennsylvania State Police are conducting the crash and criminal investigation.

Officer Champion was an Army Veteran serving in the Iraqi War. He served the Perryopolis Borough Police Department for eight months. He also worked part time for the Derry Borough Police Department.

Officer Champion is survived by his wife and a 16-month-old son.
