Chief Richard A. Hite of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department sadly reports that Officer Perry Renn, 51, was shot and killed in the line of duty.
Officer Renn and his partner responded to a “shots fired” call on Indianapolis’ northeast side of Indianapolis near the area of 34th Street and Forest Manor Avenue.
They located the alley where the shots were reported to have been coming from. As they were searching for the suspects in the narrow space, they encountered a group of young people, one of which was extremely agitated. As officers confronted him, he brandished a semi automatic assault rifle. The officers ordered him to drop the weapon as he raised the weapon to fire.
During the ensuing gun battle, Officer Renn was struck and critically wounded. Renn and his partner both fired their duty weapons striking and critically wounding the suspect. Renn was transported to the Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Health Center where he was pronounced dead at 9:58pm.
The suspect, Major Davis Jr., 25, flat lined at the scene. He was revived by first responders and transported to Eskenazi Medical Center in critical condition. Davis underwent surgery and is expected to make a full recovery. Murder charges are pending.
Officer Renn was a 21-ear veteran of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
