In Memoriam: Officer Kevin Toatley

Dr. Cedric Alexander, Director of the Department of Public Safety in Dekalb County, Georgia sadly reports the death of Officer Kevin Toatley.

Officer Toatley was on his way home following his normal patrol shift and stopped at the scene of the shooting of a fellow officer, MarcoVizcarrando. Officer Vizcarrando was involved in a vehicle pursuit and at the end of the pursuit a gun battle followed. Officer Vizarrando was shot in the shoulder and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for his injuries. He was treated and released as he was wearing a bullet resistant vest.

After assisting in that investigation, Officer Toatley continued to head home. Sadly, that action would be the last thing he would do as an law enforcement officer. Minutes later, Officer Toatley’s patrol vehicle was struck head on by another vehicle traveling the wrong way on the roadway. Officer Toatley was critically injured in the crash and the patrol vehicle burst into flames. The driver of the other vehicle, a Jeep Grand Cherokee was also critically injured. Three minor children in the Jeep were also seriously injured.

Officer Toatley was flown via medivac helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital were he succumbed to his wounds.

Officer Toatley served the Dekalb County Police Department for seven years.

Officer Keven Toatley-gone, but never forgotten. EOW: Saturday, September 19, 2015.
