Chief Paul Workman of the Laguna Beach Police Department in California has reported that Officer Jon Coutchie, 42, was killed in an accident involving his motor unit and a pickup truck late Saturday night.
As Officer Coutchie was approaching Cleo Street on the Pacific Coast Highway, his motor unit struck a pickup truck while he was searching for a reckless driver that had successfully evaded other pursuing officers.
Coutchie was thrown to the pavement and died at the scene. Other responding officers covered his body at the scene with an American Flag in respect to a fellow officer and a U.S. Army Ranger.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
Officer Coutchie was an Army veteran, serving two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. He served the Laguna Beach Police Department 6 years, first as a jailer and the last 4 as a motor officer.
Officer Coutchie is survived by his parents, brother, stepsister, and his girlfriend.
