Officer Daniel was assisting a motorist in a red Ford Mustang that had run out of gas at about 6:40 p.m. Monday night. He was in the center turn lane of Highway 138 near Commerce Drive. Roadside Assistance John Cook,, 58, was also on scene. At the time of the hit and run, he was pouring the gasoline into the Mustang. Officer Daniel arrived first, stopping behind the stranded vehicle. Officer Daniel had his emergency lights activated.
While the motorist was being assisted, both Officer Daniel and Mr. Cook were struck by a passing pickup truck. The driver of the pickup truck fled the scene and remains at large.
The driver fled east bound on Georgia route 138 toward Rockdale County. The crash occurred about 6:40 pm.
Both Officer Daniel and Mr. Cook were transported by ambulance to a Atlanta Medical Center. Both were immediately taken into surgery. Sadly, Officer Daniel died of his injuries during surgery an hour later. Mr. Cook sustained serious injuries and remains hospitalized. He is expected to fully recover .
The Henry County Police and the Georgia State Patrol are searching for a 2000 to 2008 Ford F-250 or F-350 pickup truck – possibly a dual wheel style truck. The vehicle would have extensive front end damage and a missing driver’s side mirror.
The Henry County Police and the Georgia State Patrol are conducting the crash investigation. As in any vehicle crash, debris and vehicle parts left at the scene will provide clues to identify the striking vehicle, according to Major Jason Bolton of the Henry County Police.
A monetary reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the driver of the Ford pick up truck.
Officer Daniel served the Henry County Police Department for two years following his retirement fro the DeKalb County Police Department as a Lieutenant with twenty six years of service.
Officer Daniel, gone but never forgotten.
