In Memoriam: Officer Eddie Johnson Jr.


Jason “Jake” Simmons of the Alton (Missouri) Police Department sadly reports the death of Patrol Officer Eddie Johnson Jr.

Officer Johnson, 45, was responding to a structure fire in an unincorporated area locally known as Royal Oak, 6 miles west of Alton. While driving his 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer patrol vehicle, Officer Johnson lost control of the patrol unit and left the roadway. The vehicle struck a driveway drainage culvert and rolled over several times.

The Missouri Highway Patrol reported that the single vehicle crash occurred on US 160, five miles west of Alton.   Officer Johnson was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash and was ejected from the patrol vehicle as it rolled. He sustained critical head injuries in the crash. Johnson was transported to Ozarks Medical Center in West Plains where he was pronounced dead at 1:05 pm.

The crash is being investigated by the Missouri Highway Patrol’s Major Crash Investigation Unit from Troop E in in Poplar Bluff.

Alton Fire Department personnel also responded to the structure fire. The home was completely destroyed by the fire.

Officer Johnson served the Alton Police Department for 9 years. He also served as the Chief of the Alton Volunteer Fire Department for four years and was also a reserve deputy with the Oregon County Sheriff Department. Officer Johnson leaves behind his wife and three children.
