Chief Mark Messner of the Waldwick Police Department in New Jersey sadly reports that Officer Christopher Goodell was killed in a patrol vehicle crash.

Office Goodell, 32, was working stationary speed enforcement on the southbound lanes of Route 17 near Bergen Avenue when his unmarked patrol vehicle was struck from behind by a tractor-trailer.

Officer Goodell’s vehicle was violently shoved into a retaining wall around a residence and crushed between the wall and the semi. Officer Goodell died at the scene.

The driver of the JB Hunt semi truck, Ryan Cumberbatch, 28, of Brooklyn was not injured.  He called 911 to report the crash and remained at the scene.  The crash remains under investigation and no charges have been filed.

Officer Goodell served the Waldwick Police Department for 5 years and was a Marine Corps veteran.  He is survived by his family and his fiancé’.
