Chief Charlie Beck of the Los Angeles Police Department sadly reports that Motor Officer Chris Cortijo, 51, passed away due to injuries he sustained in a traffic crash 4 days ago.
Officer Chris Cortijo was stopped at a red light behind another vehicle at the intersection of Lankershim Boulevard and Saticoy Street when a red Chevrolet Blazer SUV struck his motor unit at a high rate of speed. The force of the collision slammed his motor unit into the vehicle he was behind, crushing the motorcycle, pinning him between.
Cortijo was transported to Mission Hills Hospital where he remained in ICU in a coma. Officer Cortijo never regained consciousness and passed away Wednesday morning.
The suspect driver, Qaneak Shaney Cobb, 33, was arrested at the scene of the crash and charged with DUI causing serious injury and possession of cocaine. She pled not guilty at an arraignment Tuesday and was held on a $150,000.00 dollar bond. Those charges are expected to be upgraded to include DUI causing death and negligent homicide pending the District Attorney’s review.
Motor Officer Chris Cortijo was a 26-year LAPD veteran and a Marine Corps veteran. He is survived by his wife and children.
