Chief Robert Kochen of the Tarpon Springs (Florida) Police Department sadly reports the death of Officer Charles Kondek.

Officer Kondek, 45, was shot as he was exiting his patrol unit in response to a noise complaint. The complaint involved an unknown subject knocking on several doors of a condominium complex.

As Officer Kondek exited his vehicle, the suspect with a handgun immediately fired him upon. The suspect then fled the scene. The suspect was apprehended a short distance from the scene when he crashed his vehicle into a utility pole and a parked car.

Officer Kondek was transported to Florida North Pinellas Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

Officer Kondek served the Tarpon Springs Police Department for 17 years. He previously served with NYPD for 5 years. Officer Kondek is survived by his wife and five children.
