Chief Lindsey Horton of the Jackson Mississippi Police Department reported that Officer Bruce Jacob, 35, was struck and killed by a vehicle Saturday shortly after 1:30 p.m.  Officer Jacob was dispatched on a call of debris in the roadway in the southbound lanes of I-55 near Northside Drive.

Officer Jacob parked his patrol vehicle on the median with his emergency lights activated.  He removed the debris, a barbecue gas grill, and was placing the grill in the trunk of his patrol car when he was struck from behind.

Officer Jacob was transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.  The driver who struck Officer Jacob was also transported to the hospital.  His condition was not released, but he is expected to recover.

The driver has not yet been interviewed, as questions remain unanswered as to the cause of the crash.  No mention of any possible criminal charges has been reported.  The investigation is continuing.

Chief Horton commented, “It’s always tough to lose anyone, and not just the death of an officer but even an injury.  We know that this job is very dangerous. He was a public servant doing what we do when we receive calls for service.”

Officer Jacob was a 5-year veteran of the Jackson Police Department.  He was assigned to Precinct 4.
