Chief Dean Turley of the Pell City Police Department sadly reports the death of Lieutenant Richard Woods.

Lt. Woods, 48, suffered a heart attack while he was assisting in a rescue operation at a traffic accident. Lt. Woods and the Pell City Fire Rescue Team were extricating a young driver from a vehicle that had been involved in a crash. During the extrication proceedures, Lt. Woods suffered a medical emergency and collapsed.

Fire Rescue Personnel provided immediate advanced first aid life support and Regional Paramedical Service transported him to St. Vincent’s-St. Clair Hospital where he later passed away.

Lt. Woods was the Commanding Officer of the Special Operations Division and served the Pell City Police Department for 20 years. He is survived by his wife and two sons.
