Sheriff Gene Dana of the Kittitas County Sheriff Department in Washington, sadly reports the death of Deputy Ryan Thompson.

Deputy Thompson, 42, was shot and critically wounded during the apprehension of a suspect following a vehicle pursuit.

Deputy Thompson was dispatched to a road rage incident.  After arriving at the scene and locating a vehicle involved, he attempted to make a traffic stop.  The driver refused to stop and a pursuit followed.  The pursuit went into the village of Kittitas where a village officer also joined the pursuit.

The driver of the vehicle stopped in the village and then exited his vehicle while opening fire upon both officers.  Deputy Thompson was critically wounded and the Kittitas officer was also injured by the suspect’s gunfire.  During the gun battle, the suspect was shot and killed.

Deputy Thompson was transported to Kittitas Valley Hospital where he succumbed to his gunshot wounds a short time after his arrival.

Deputy Thompson’s law enforcement career spanned fifteen years.  He served the Kittitas County Sheriff Department as a reserve officer in 2004 and later as a corrections officer.  In 2007 he left and worked for the Central Washington University Police Department.  He returned to Kittitas County Sheriff Department in 2013.  Deputy Thompson is survived by his wife and three children.

In this tragic time for the family of this warrior, support and hope are offered from others who have experienced similar tragedies. Concerns Of Police Survivors (COPS) Executive Director Dianne Bernhard commented on the shooting.

“The news of the line-of-duty death of Deputy Sheriff Ryan Thompson not only effects the community of Kittitas County (WA), it effects our entire nation,” said Bernhard. “The senseless death of a hero will never be understood, but one thing is for sure; his wife, children, family and co-workers will have the unwavering support of the C.O.P.S. organization.”
