Chief Dennis D. Barry of the Middletown New York Police Department has reported that a Departmental K-9 Axe has died.

Chief Barry stated that Axe, and his handler, Officer Michael McDonald were participating in their daily training exercises at the Orange County Sheriff Department K9 Academy.   After Axe had completed his exercises for the afternoon, Axe collapsed and went into cardiac arrest.

Axe was rushed to a Monhagen Veterinary Hospital where he was pronounced dead.  The cause of death has been reported as a heart attack.  Axe did not have any reported health concerns prior to entering training.

Authorities stated that Axe’s death was not heat related in any way.  Even though the temperatures were in the low 80’s, handlers provided plenty of rest breaks during the training and adequate shade with watering facilities for the dogs.

Axe was an 18-month-old Belgian Malinois and was still in the basic K9 training academy.  He was due to complete his training and graduate from the Academy on July 11th.  Axe served for a total of four months.  Good boy, Axe.
