Investigator Estrada was off duty at the time and was near the intersection of 30th Street and St. Charles Road in Bellwood. He was attending a family Christmas party at the VFW hall nearby when he stepped outside for a few moments.
He observed an armed robbery taking place in the VFW Hall parking lot. He took action immediately as an LEO by approaching the suspect. He was reaching for his off duty weapon as he identified himself as an officer intending to arrest the suspect.
The suspect turned abruptly toward him and fired his firearm once striking Investigator Estrada in the chest. The suspect fled the scene and remains at large.
Estrada was transported to the Loyola University Medical Center where he died a short time later.
Investigator Estrada served the Cook County Sheriff Department for 20 years and was a USMC veteran. He is survived by his wife and children.
