The San Bernardino County Sheriff Department is reporting that one of their detectives was killed and another deputy seriously injured in a late night vehicle crash on I-40.

Martin Landaeta, 41, a 14 year veteran was killed in the crash when the vehicle he was driving struck a semi-tractor trailer rig immediately after the driver had lost control and the truck rolled over in front of the vehicle Landaeta was driving.

A deputy who has not yet been named who was in the vehicle with Landaeta was seriously injured.  The detective’s wife, who was also in the vehicle, was not seriously injured and was expected to be released from the hospital in Needles California according to CHP Officials.

The trio was traveling to Laughlin, Nevada for a two day River Daze Barbecue event that was hosted by the Sheriff’s Department Colorado River Station, as were many of the departmental personnel.

Initial reports state that the collision was unavoidable and that the driver’s door struck the semi-truck.  Initial reports indicate that Landaeta was attempting to avoid the collision. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Landaeta spent most of his career at the Chino Hills Station of the Sheriff’s Department and had recently been promoted to the Homicide Division.  The injured Deputy is still assigned to the Chino Hills Station.
