Joseph D. Coronato, Prosecuting Attorney for the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office in New Jersey sadly reports the death of Detective John Stevens.

Detective Stevens, 44, succumbed to injuries he sustained in a single vehicle crash he was involved in two weeks ago. At the time of the crash, he was working on a narcotics investigation with the Special Operations Group and driving an undercover vehicle. For unknown reasons, the vehicle abruptly swerved to the left, crossed the roadway and struck a tree. Detective Stevens sustained severe head injuries in the crash.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the Lacey Township Police Department.

Detective Stevens was airlifted to the Jersey Shore University Medical Center where he remained in a coma until succumbing to his injuries early in the morning.

Detective Stevens had served the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office for 15 years. He had previously served with the New Jersey State Attorney’s Office for five years. He is survived by his wife and a son, 10.

Detective John Stevens-gone, but never forgotten. EOW: Wednesday, January 21, 2015.
