Chief Terry Ziegler of the Kansas City Police Department in Kansas sadly reports the death of Detective Brad Lancaster.

Detective Lancaster, 39, was shot and killed by a suspect who had fled uniformed officers as they responded to a suspicious person complaint at the Hollywood Casino. Detective Lancaster responded to assist the uniformed officers search for the suspect. Detective Lancaster located the suspect in a field not far from the Kansas City Speedway. Detective Lancaster confronted the suspect which resulted in an exchange of gunfire. Detective Lancaster was struck twice in the chest.

The suspect then stole Detective Lancaster’s unmarked patrol unit and fled the scene. The suspect abandoned Detective Lancaster’s patrol unit after crashing it about nine miles from the shooting. The suspect then carjacked a citizen’s vehicle that was occupied by two minor children in the rear seat. The mother if the children sustained cuts, abrasions and a broken arm as she attempted to protect her children who were secured in their car seats in the vehicle. The suspect apparently was dragging the children’s mother down the road as he fled with her vehicle. The suspect abandoned this vehicle a short distance away leaving the minor children in the vehicle unharmed.

A second citizen’s vehicle was carjacked by the suspect during his attempts to flee. Officers located the vehicle and a short pursuit followed. The suspect crashed this vehicle and attempted to carjack a third vehicle. A female driver was shot in the shoulder as she resisted the suspect’s attempts to take her vehicle. The suspect, still being chased on foot by officers, was shot and taken into custody.

During the carjacking spree, Detective Lancaster was transported by ambulance to KU Medical Center where he underwent surgery. Detective Lancaster later succumbed to his gunshot wounds.

Detective Lancaster served the Kansas City Police Department for ten years. He is a U. S. Air Force veteran and had served two tours of duty overseas. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
