Watauga County, NC., Sheriff Len Hagaman sadly reports that Deputy William Mast Jr. age 24 was shot and killed about 1:15am Thursday as he and another deputy responded to an unknown disturbance call in Deep Gap.
Details about the call were not released but as deputies responded to a mobile home trailer at 2130 Hardin Road, shots rang out. Both deputies were shot, by an unknown male. Deputy Mast was critically injured. The other deputy was able to return fire and kill the suspect.
Deputy Mast and the suspect were both transported to a local hospital where they were both pronounced deceased. The State Bureau of Investigation is handling the shooting incident and the North Carolina Highway Patrol is diverting traffic from the area.
Deputy William Mast Jr. served the Watagua County Sheriff Department for 3 years. He is survived by his expectant wife, Paige, who is due to deliver their first child any day.
