Sheriff Larry Jones of the Johnson County Sheriff Department on Arkansas sadly reports the death of Reserve Deputy Sonny Smith.

Deputy Smith, 42, was shot and killed as he and other deputies searched for a burglary suspect. Deputy Smith unexpectedly located the suspect and began chasing him on foot. The suspect abruptly turned toward Deputy Smith, brandished a firearm and shot Deputy Smith striking him in the throat. Deputy Smith was able to return fire also wounding the suspect. Deputy Smith died at the scene of the shooting. The suspect was treated for his wounds and lodged in the Pope County Detention Center.

The last officer killed in the line of duty from Johnson County Sheriff Department was Sheriff John Hall Powers back in 1902. The Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the shooting incident.

Deputy Smith was a U.S. Navy veteran and served the Johnson County Sheriff Department for 11 years. He is survived by his wife and two children.
