Sheriff John McMahon of the San Bernardino County Sheriff Department identified Deputy Sheriff / Detective Jeremiah Mackay, 35, as the LEO who was killed during a gun battle as officers attempted to take a serial killer targeting law enforcement (whose name will not be glorified in this article) into custody.
Deputy Mackay and another deputy were injured by gun fire as hundreds of rounds were exchanged between many LEOs and this killer in his final attempts to escape from being taken into custody alive. Both deputies were flown via medivac helicopter to Loma Linda University Medical Center where Deputy Mackay succumbed to his injuries. Deputy Alex Collins is expected to fully recover from his injuries.
Mackay was assigned to the Yucaipa Station and also served as a detective for the Big Bear Station of the Sheriff’s Department. In total, Deputy Mackay served the San Bernardino County Sheriff Department for 15 years. He is survived by his wife, a 7 year old daughter and a 4 month old son.
This is a sad ending for the search and attempts to arrest this vicious killer. However, this memorial is not about the murderer. Today, we celebrate Deputy Sheriff/Detective Mackay’s life, bravery, and service. Mackay died protecting the citizens of Big Bear, California. We honor him today for that.
Deputy Sheriff/Detective Jeremiah Mackay for valor, dedication to duty and self sacrifice, you will be forever missed and never forgotten.
