Sheriff Leon Dwerlkotte of the Cedar Missouri County Sheriff Department sadly reports the death of Deputy Matthew Chism.

Deputy Chism, 25, was shot and killed during a traffic stop that resulted in a vehicle pursuit and foot chase in El Dorado Springs shortly after midnight. Deputy Chism attempted to stop a vehicle near U.S. Highway 54 and Missouri Route 82 for being operated at nighttime without head lights.

The driver of the suspect vehicle refused to stop and fled. A vehicle pursuit followed during which the passenger bailed out of the vehicle near Hickory and High Streets. The driver continued down the roadway fleeing police.

Deputy Chism left his patrol unit and chased the passenger on foot. During the foot chase, Deputy Chism was able to catch up with the passenger and attempt to take him into custody. During the arrest, the suspect fought with Deputy Chism as he attempted to escape custody.

The altercation escalated to the point that there was an exchange of gunfire between the two combatants. Both Deputy Chism and the suspect were struck by the exchange of bullets. The suspect died at the scene fro of his gunshot wound. Deputy Chism was transported to Cedar County Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his gunshot injury.

The driver was located and arrested a short distance from the shooting. The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the circumstances that led up to the shooting.

Deputy Chism served the Cedar County Sheriff Department for one year and ten months.   He is survived by his wife and a young child.
