Sheriff Chris Davis of the Humphreys County Sheriff Department in Tennessee sadly reports the death of Deputy Sheriff Martin Tase Sturgill II.

Deputy Sturgill, 49, and other officers of the Humphreys County Sheriff Department were developing a new physical assessment test for the department’s Emergency Response Team.  They had just completed a timed distance run at Waverly Central High School when Deputy Sturgill suddenly collapsed and was unresponsive.

Deputies and AMR Ambulance EMTs on scene administered CPR, first aid and basic life support assistance to Deputy Sturgill.  Later advanced life support was administered as he was airlifted and transported to Nautilus Memorial Hospital where he died a short time later.

Deputy Sturgill served the Humphreys County Sheriff Department in a variety of capacities during his twelve-year tenure.  He currently was the Jail Administrator and the Department’s Training Officer.  He is survived by his wife and four children.
