Deputy Maltby, 73, was on duty and driving to work when a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction swerved to avoid hitting another vehicle and drove into the oncoming traffic lane. The wrong way driver then hit Deputy Maltby’s Chevrolet Tahoe, patrol vehicle head-on. Deputy Maltby sustained fatal injuries in the crash and died at the scene. The crash is being investigated by Troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety and their Crash Reconstruction Unit.

Deputy Maltby served the Eastland County Sheriff Department for two years. He had previously served and retired from the Dallas and Stephenville Police Departments. He also served on the Tri-County Narcotics Task Force which later was expanded to include three more counties and renamed the Cross Timbers Narcotics Task Force.
