Geoff Dean of the Ventura County California Sheriff Department in California sadly reports the death of Deputy Eugene Kostiuchenko.
Deputy Kostiuchenko, 41, was returning to his patrol vehicle following a traffic stop on the Ventura Freeway near Lewis Road in Camarillo when he was struck by a drunk driver. The suspect driver fled the scene of the crash.
Three other deputies witnessed the crash that fatally injured Deputy Kostiuchenko. One of them, Deputy Kostichenko’s parter, rendered aid to him while other deputies in another patrol unit chased the suspect vehicle and driver. The suspect, 25, was identified as Kevin Hogrefe of Camarillo crashed his vehicle a short distance from the traffic stop scene on the freeway.
The suspect was arrested at the scene of the second crash and was booked on suspicion of Felony DUI and Felony Hit and Run from a traffic crash. Additional charges could be levied pending a prosecutor reviewing the incident report.
The crash is being investigated by the California Highway Patrol Crash Reconstruction Team. The last Ventura County Sheriff Deputy to be killed in the line of duty was also struck and killed by a drunk driver.
Deputy Kostiuchenko was an 11-year department veteran who is survived by his wife and two stepchildren.
