In Memoriam – Deputy Josh MitchellReagan County, Texas Sheriff Jeff Garner stated that Deputy Josh Mitchell, 26, and six-year veteran was shot and killed in Big Lake, Texas on Wednesday, shortly after 6:00 pm.

Deputy Mitchell and other officers were searching for a suicidal subject when the male suspect was encountered in the 1100 block of Main Street and opened fire on officers.

Deputy Mitchell was fatally wounded.  He succumbed to his wounds while being transported to a hospital in San Angelo.

The suspect barricaded himself in a nearby residence after the shooting; a standoff continues.  It is not known if the suspect is still in the residence or at large.  His identity has not been released.

Big Lake is a small town in western Texas about 70 miles southwest of Midland with a population of about 2,900.

Sheriff Deputy Josh Mitchell is survived by wife, mother and grandmother.
