Sheriff Greg Hamilton of the Travis County Texas Sheriff Department sadly reports the death of Senior Deputy Jessica Hollis.

Deputy Hollis, 35, was on patrol checking for flooding roads in a heavy rainstorm during the midnight shift. About 1:50 a.m., she was driving in the area of Fritz Hughes Park Road and Low Water Crossing Road, which was upstream from Lake Austin.

A sudden flood of water washed across the roadway and her patrol vehicle was washed into the river. Deputy Hollis was able to radio the dispatcher and advised that the vehicle was swept into the river with her inside.

An immediate search for her resulted in her patrol vehicle being located down river, but she was not inside it. The patrol vehicle was recovered from the river later in the day. Deputy Hollis’ body was not located and recovered until the following day.

Deputy Jessica Hollis served the Travis County Sheriff Department for 7 years. She worked in the Vice Unit and as a Road Patrol deputy. She was a member of the Sheriff Department’s Search and Recovery Dive Team.

Deputy Hollis is survived by her husband, an Austin Police Department officer and her son, 12.
