The crash occurred on Paul Mallard Road at Post Drive in Luling. Deputy Watson was north bound in a fully marked patrol car, a 2010 Dodge Charger. He was responding to an emergency call to back up another officer. His vehicles lights and siren were activated.
A 2004 Toyota Tundra pickup truck driven by Dallas Vernon, 56, made a left turn onto Post Drive into the path of Deputy Watson’s patrol vehicle. Deputy Watson swerved to avoid the pickup, but sideswiped it. This caused Deputy Watson to lose control of his vehicle entering Mallard Road’s southbound lanes. Watson struck Ford Expedition head on. The Expedition was driven by 80 year old Arthur Tregre. The Expedition was then struck by Honda motorcycle driven by 29 year old Aaron Hagmann.
Mr. Tegre was transported to University Hospital New Orleans with critical injuries. Deputy Watson was transported to St. Charles Parish Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The motorcycle and pickup truck drivers sustained only minor injuries.
The Louisiana State Police are conducting the crash investigation. Investigating trooper’s investigation stated that Deputy Watson and Arthur Tregre were not wearing his seat. Speed and failure to wear seat belts contributed to the severity of the injuries in this crash.
Watson was a 12-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department. Deputy Sheriff Jeff Watson, gone but never forgotten.
