Sheriff J. Keith Gary of the Grayson County Sheriff Department in Texas has reported that Deputy Sheriff Chad Key, 42, was struck and killed by an alleged drunk driver while directing traffic Saturday evening shortly before 10:30pm.

Deputy Key was directing traffic at the intersection of U.S. Highway 82 and Bethany Road to assist Texas DPS Troopers as they investigated a traffic crash that was the end result of a police pursuit.

A vehicle approached the crash scene and struck Deputy Key as he was directing traffic.  The driver, later identified as 28 year old Ricky Trent Stanley, failed to stop at the accident but was arrested a short distance away.  Stanley had prior convictions of DWI in 2002 and 2004. His latest DWI arrest was in August 2012.  He was out on a $10,000 bond, as it was considered his third offense.  He will face additional charges in this incident.  Blood test results are still pending analysis.

Deputy Key was transported to the Texoma Medical Center in Denison, where he later died due to his injuries.  Deputy Key had served the Grayson County Sheriff Department as a corrections officer for 3-1/2 years. He had just transferred to the patrol division and worked road patrol for two months.

Deputy Key is survived by his wife and three sons, ages 20, 10 and 2 months.
