Sheriff Lewis Collins of the Choctaw County Sheriff Department has reported that one of his Deputies has been killed in the line of duty. Deputy Sheriff Brian Hayden, 47 years, of Sawyer, was responding to assist another officer on a “shots fired” call.

Tribal Officer Josiah Moore, 29, of Hugo, was responding to the same call.  Both officers were driving patrol vehicles on US 70, three miles west of Soper.  Both officers wearing seat belts and had their emergency lights and sirens activated.

Hayden who was driving a 2005 Chevy patrol truck,made a left turn onto a county road.  Officer Moore, driving a 2008 Ford Crown Victoria, was following behind Hayden.  Moore’s patrol car struck the driver’s side door of Hayden’s patrol truck. Both officers were pinned in their patrol vehicles.  Deputy Hayden died at the scene of the crash.  Moore was extricated by the Soper Fire Department and medivac flown to Plano Texas Medical Center where he is in stable condition.  The roadway and intersection was closed for 5 1/2 hours while the Oklahoma State Police investigated the crash.
