In Memoriam – Deputy Billy “Bubba” KennedySheriff Dan Brown of the Upton County Texas Sheriff Department has reported that Deputy Sheriff Billy “Bubba” Kennedy, 38, was shot and killed late Wednesday night at a convenience store in McCamey, Texas.

The incident occurred about 11:15 pm in the parking lot of the Stripes Convenience Store, 50 miles south of Odessa in western Texas. Deputy Kennedy came in contact with an unknown male subject outside the store.  The reason for the contact with the subject and the subsequent shooting are not being released at this time. 

Media reports indicate that between 8 and 11 gunshots were heard during the gun battle.  The male suspect involved is in custody and is being treated for gunshot wounds he sustained in the shooting.

A second deputy who was with Deputy Kennedy was not injured.  Deputy Kennedy died of his wounds at the scene.  His body was later transported to the Odessa Hospital pending an autopsy.  The shooting remains under investigation by the Texas Rangers.

Deputy Sheriff Billy Kennedy’s law enforcement career spanned 14 years, the last 4 years with the Upton County Sheriff Department.  His prior service at Pecos County and Brown County spanned an additional 10 years.  He is survived by his wife and two sons, 15 and 11.
