Sheriff Maxey Cerliano of the Gregg County Sheriff Department in Texas sadly reports the death of Corrections Officer Robert Ransom.

Officer Ransom, 62, was nearing the end of his work shift when an inmate suffered a heart attack and needed emergency medical care. Officer Ransom assisted other sheriff deputies providing medical care for that inmate. Officer Ransom recognized the need of an AED and went to retrieve one.

While Officer Ransom was getting the AED, he too suffered a heart attack and collapsed. Both Officer Ransom and the inmate were transported to the God Shepard Medical Center. The inmate survived and was later returned to the jail, however, Officer Ransom did not. He passed away at the hospital.

Officer Ransom served the Gregg County Sheriff Department for eleven years. He had previously served and retired from the Porter County Sheriff Department in Indiana. He served as a Deputy Sheriff for twenty five years.
