Warden James J. Larson of the Luzerne County Correctional Facility in Pennsylvania sadly reports the death of Corrections Officer Kristopher Moules.

Officer Moules, 25, was attacked by another inmate inside the facility on the fifth floor. The altercation started as a verbal dispute and escalated into a physical assault in seconds. Officer Moules activated an alarm and other Corrections Officers came to his aid. The altercation spilled over into a common area of the facility near the elevator. During the altercation, which lasted less than a minute, the two combatants fell against the elevator door. The door gave way and suddenly opened. Both Officer Moules and the inmate fell down the elevator shaft to their deaths.

Other Corrections Officers that had come to Moules’ aid to break up the fight also fell through the door, but didn’t fall down the shaft.

Corrections Officer Moules was transported to Wilkes-Barre General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Officer Moules had served the Luzerne County Corrections Department for 10 months. He is survived by his parents and his brother.
