In Memoriam: Corrections Officer Adam S. Conrad

Sheriff Richard Stevenson, of the Marion County Sheriff Department in Illinois sadly reports the death of Correctional Officer Adam S. Conrad.

Officer Conrad, 22, was killed in a motor vehicle crash on Interstate 57 near Mount Vernon. Officer Conrad was conducting a prisoner transfer for a court appointment when he lost control of the transport van on the snow covered and icy roadway. The transport van spun out of control from the northbound lanes of the freeway and into the median. The van traveled through the median and into the southbound traffic lanes where it was struck by a semi truck tractor and trailer combination vehicle.

The semi truck struck the transport van on the passenger front corner causing extensive damage to the van. The semi truck then jack knifed and came to a rest on the right shoulder of the road.

Officer Conrad and the juvenile prisoner were trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated from the van by the fire department personnel. Officer Conrad sustained critical injuries in the crash and was later pronounced dead in the emergency room of Good Samaritan Hospital. The juvenile prisoner sustained incapacitating but non-life threatening injuries in the crash. He was stabilized at Crossroads Community Hospital and then transferred to a regional hospital for further treatment.

The freeway was closed for several hours while the crash was investigated by the Illinois State Police Crash Reconstruction Team.

Officer Conrad served the Marion County Sheriff Department for one and one half years.
He is survived by his parents and his brother.
