Chief Tony Kirk, of the Topeka, Kansas, Police Department in Kansas sadly reports the death of Corporal Jason E. Harwood.

Corporal Harwood, 40, was shot during a traffic stop on South East Sixth Avenue near Deer Creek Parkway at about 4:45 pm. Witnesses stated that there were two or three occupants in the blue or green four-door vehicle that opened fire on Corporal Harwood as he approached the driver’s door.   As the sound of the shots still echoed through the streets, the vehicle sped away leaving Corporal Harwood lying in the street dying.

Multiple witnesses called 911 to report the shooting and rendered medical aid to Corporal Harwood. One citizen even used Corporal Harwood’s radio to report that he had been shot.   Emergency first responders arrived and transported Corporal Harwood to Stormont Vail Hospital where he later died.

The suspected shooter, Ross Preston Lane, 30, apparently didn’t want to end up being shot and killed by arresting officers so he called a local reporter and identified himself as the wanted person. He also gave the reporter his address. Shawnee County Sheriff Deputies went to the Lawrence, Kansas address and arrested Lane at about 8:00 pm.

The Shawnee County Sheriff Department, assisted by the Kansas Highway Patrol, is handling the homicide investigation.

Corporal Harwood was a 15-year veteran who had served in the Traffic Crash Investigation and K-9 units. He was promoted to corporal in May 2012. Corporal Harwood is survived by his wife, Lori, and two sons.
