Colonel Matthew Packard, Director of the Colorado State Highway Patrol, sadly reports the death of Corporal Daniel Groves.

Cpl. Groves, 52, was struck by a vehicle and killed while he was outside his patrol vehicle assisting a motorist.

Cpl. Groves was on patrol during a blizzard and located a vehicle that had slid off the roadway and was stuck in the snow on Interstate 76.  As Cpl. Groves was assisting the motorist, another vehicle approached his location.  The driver of this vehicle, a 2001 Volvo, was also traveling too fast for conditions and slid off the roadway in the same location.  The Volvo then struck Corporal Groves, critically injuring him.

Corporal Groves was transported to Platte Valley Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

Excessive speed and poor driving conditions were listed as contributing factors in the crash by the State Patrol’s Crash Reconstruction Team as they investigated the crash.  Upon completion, investigative reports will be forwarded to the local prosecutor for review.

Corporal Groves served the Colorado State Highway Patrol for twelve years.

Corporal Daniel Groves is gone, but will never be forgotten.  EOW:  Wednesday, March 13, 2019
