Elizabeth Nelson, Mayor of MarlinTexas sadly reports the death of Chief Darrell Allen.
Chief Allen was working uniformed security at the LaidBack Lounge, a nightclub that is situated across the street from the Temple Police Department in Texas.
While he was working the security job, Chief Allen encountered an intoxicated and disorderly subject. In attempting to remove the disorderly subject from the club an argument followed and Chief Allen attempted to arrest him. During the arrest, the suspect produced a handgun and shot Chief Allen in the face. Officer Alvonda Kay, also working the security detail and a uniformed officer of the Marlin Police Department along with an officer from the Temple Police Department were able to take the suspect into custody. The suspect was lodged in the Temple City Jail.
Chief Allen was transported to the Baylor Scott & White Hospital for emergency medical treatment and surgery. Following surgery, he remained in the intensive care unit until he succumbed to his gunshot wound.
Chief Allen’s law enforcement career spanned 21 years. He joined the Marlin Police Department in 2005 as a Patrol Officer and was named Assistant Chief in 2006. He was promoted to the Chief’s position in 2009 as a result of the resignation of Chief Tom Hamilton. Chief Allen is survived by his wife and children.
