The Pueblo, Colorado County Sheriff’s Department sadly reports that Captain Leide Defusco, a 22 year veteran of law enforcement, and retired Captain John Barger were both killed in a plane crash.  Captain Barger was the pilot of the Piper Super Cruiser plane.  The mission was to conduct a search of the San Isabel National Forest, Wet Mountains area for any marijuana growth operations.  A previous raid conducted on August 15 at two different locations netted the largest amount of marijuana recovered in the history of the State of Colorado.

Radio contact was lost while the officers were conducting the aerial search about 9:30 a.m.

Rescue personnel located the smoldering wreckage of the plant about 5 miles below St.

Charles Peak in Custer County, Colorado.

The cause of the plane crash is still under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.

Captain Defusco is survived by his wife and four children.
