The suspect who was arrested on Sunday following the death of a nanny was in the country illegally, according to a report from Fox News.

Authorities reported that 33-year-old Jorge Rios was from Honduras, and did not gain access to be in the country legally. Police took him into custody in connection with the murder of 45-year-old Carolina Cano.

According to Cano’s roommate, the nanny went out for a jog around 5:30am on March 24th, but never returned back to the apartment. Cano’s body was discovered at around 7:30am. The Hudson County Medical Examiner reported that she had been raped and strangled.

Police found Cano naked from the waist down in Lincoln Park in Jersey City on the 24th, her body submerged in the lake.

NJ.com reported that Rios was captured on closed circuit security footage near the lake around the time that Cano’s murder was rumored to go down. Police say that Rios often visited the park, but that investigators did not believe that Rios and Cano knew each other.

“Our understanding is that it was strangers. He frequented the park and we feel comfortable we have the right person based on his statement,” said Mayor Steve Fulop in a press conference earlier this week.

Cano, was described by friends as a giving person and deeply religious.

 

Rios was taken into custody and faces charges of murder, felony murder, kidnapping, and aggravated sexual assault. His arraignment is scheduled for Thursday.

Fulop credited authorities for handling the situation in a quick and professional manner. “When you understand the video, the background, and the statements, this was just a horrible situation,” Fulop said Monday. “The entire circumstance was a terrible thing, and the prosecutors did a great job wrapping it up quick.”

 

Police have gone back to scour the bottom of the lake to ensure they have not missed anything.

There has been a steady increase of deaths caused by people in the country illegally over the last year. Just a few months ago, 20-year-old Mollie Tibbitts went missing. Police arrested an illegal immigrant in connection with her her kidnapping and murder.

Just last week, a young teacher was killed by a driver who was in the country illegally.
