Sanctuary. Refuge. Harbor. Shelter. Safety. Hiding place. I read that list of words to my wife and asked her to give me one word that came to mind when hearing them. Her response: HOME. It may conjure up other places or thoughts for different people. Typically, they are associated with something good.
I never thought I would see the day that those words were associated in such a negative way.
The entire left coast has become a sanctuary…for rapists, murderers and other felonious sorts. More specifically, criminals with a history of criminal activity.
We have an entire government agency devoted to dealing with these types of miscreants, ICE. We have federal laws on the books.
And leaders in states like California, Oregon and Washington are all for violating federal law and blocking the very government agency designed to deal with these repeat offenders.
Now ICE is fighting back against these states by criticizing Washington’s new laws by providing detailed examples of the danger they believe it presents to the public.
According to Fox News, ICE issued a press release featuring seven cases in which ICE requested detainers on criminal migrants not here legally who are being held in local jails. Those requests were ignored, many with tragic consequences.
Rosalio Ramos-Ramoswas was arrested last January for murder and dismembering his victim. It happened just months after Ramos was released from a Washington jail despite ICE’s request for an immigration detainer and notification of his pending release, neither of which were honored.
ICE also cites the case of Mexican national Martin Gallo-Gallardo, who was in a Clackamas County Oregon jail. The statement said jail officials ignored ICE’s request for an immigration detainer and notification of release. Gallardo was released and within months was re-arrested, this time for allegedly murdering his wife.
As detailed in a piece on Law Enforcement Today, the story is told of Jose Ines Garcia Zarate. He was the 5x deported criminal that was acquitted for the murder of Kate Steinle. He was only convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The fact that it was proven that he was in possession of the gun and pulled the trigger was enough to secure a conviction.
He is currently serving time on his 3-year sentence, which will probably end in time served. This past January, Garcia Zarate appealed his conviction. There is a federal detainer on him for deportation.
The most recent case involves Francisco Carranza-Ramirez, who was also in the U.S. illegally. He was convicted of raping a wheelchair-bound Seattle woman twice. He was sentenced to time served and released, under the judge’s order that he self-deport back to Mexico. King County Sheriff’s officials say he eventually did return to Mexico, but not before assaulting his victim a third time.
The Washington sanctuary law is being called the strongest sanctuary state law in the nation. It completely forbids jails and state prisons from honoring ICE detainers.
It goes even further by preventing corrections official from even letting ICE know about pending releases of criminal immigrants.
Democratic governor Jay Inslee’s explained in signing the law:
“We will not be complicit in the Trump administration’s depraved efforts to break-up hard-working immigrant and refugee families.”
Umm…what? ICE detainers aren’t typically aimed at hard- working families. They are mostly used in talking about the separation. These detainers are used to combat career criminals who are not in the U.S. legally. So, what is Governor Inslee and all the other sanctuary state governors and city mayors talking about?
Apparently, logic, reason and common sense have no bearing in the decision-making process.
As members of the law enforcement, you have undoubtedly heard of the reasonable persons standard. The reasonable person standard is a test used to define the legal duty to protect one’s own interest and that of others.
The standard requires one to act with the same degree of care, knowledge, experience, fair-mindedness, and awareness of the law that the community would expect of a hypothetical reasonable person.
Which part of sanctuary city/state laws passes the reasonable standards test? Shouldn’t elected officials have a legal duty to protect their communities. Why are these lawmakers not held to the same standard of awareness of the federal law, already on the books?
Is it that they do not have an awareness of the law? Not likely. It is more probable that they know the law and just do not care. Is it because they aren’t reasonable people? Is it because they aren’t fair-minded people?
In recent days, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has flat-out said that the border crisis is exactly like the Nazi concentration camps, all the while, being one of many members of Congress that continued to deny President Trump the $4.5 billion dollars to address the situation on the border.
Even though the House passed the bill to provide the funding, four Democrats voted against it.
And, of course, it was the usual suspects: AOC, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib and Ayanna Pressley.
Perhaps Inslee is like these four, who have shown themselves to be some of the most progressive, anti-American members of Congress. They are definitely not reasonable people.
And while they are screaming for the US to address the immigration issue and create open borders, we continue to have those not here legally who commit violent crime after violent crime. And more times than not, these felons go right back into their communities where they committed their previous crimes and commit them again and again.
Even the ones who are deported wind up coming right back.
Kate Steinle’s killer was deported 5 times and still came back. If Democratic leadership has its way, that guy and many like him, will get a free pass into this nation.
It is time to wake up. It will continue to be time to pray. Something must be done to secure our nations and its borders, ideology and way of life.
